Why people come back

The four things that actually make the difference

There is no shortage of places in Queens that will change your oil. These are the four answers customers give when we ask them, a couple of years in, why they are still bringing the car here.

A written price before a tool is picked up

You get a line-by-line estimate with photographs of what we found, and nothing happens until you reply. If we open something up and find more, work stops and you get a second estimate.

24 months and 24,000 miles on parts and labour

Both, not one or the other, and the warranty stays with the car rather than with you. If something we touched fails inside the window we put it right at no charge.

Most maintenance done the same day

Oil, brakes, tires, batteries and inspections are same-day work if the car is with us by ten in the morning. Anything longer, you get a date and we hold to it.

The old parts, in a box, if you want them

Ask and we will keep whatever we took off and show it to you. A shop that will not do that is telling you something.

The estimate

You will never collect a car and meet a number you have not already seen.

The single thing people distrust most about garages is the invoice that arrives larger than the conversation. So we took the decision out of the shop's hands entirely: nothing is done to your car that you have not seen a written price for first.

Nothing gets done to your car that you have not seen a written price for first. We inspect, we photograph what we find, we send you the photographs and a line-by-line estimate, and then we wait. If we open something up and find more, work stops and you get a second estimate before anyone picks a tool back up.

  • A free documented inspection on a lift, whatever you actually booked in for.
  • Photographs of what we found, sent to your phone with a line-by-line price.
  • Every item marked as needs doing now, needs doing soon, or worth knowing about.
  • Approve three of six lines and you get exactly those three, at exactly those prices.

Marques

The cars we work on every day

An independent shop earns the right to work on a marque with tooling, training and software — not with a sign on the door. Below is what we actually keep in the building for each family of vehicles. Where the honest answer is that a job belongs at a franchised dealer, under a factory warranty or a recall, we will say so and hand you back the keys without charging you for the conversation.

German

BMW · Mercedes-Benz · Audi · Volkswagen · Porsche · MINI

Mostly timing chains, cooling systems and electronics on these. We keep the marque-specific scan software current, because a generic code reader on a modern German car tells you a fault exists and almost nothing about where it lives.

Japanese

Toyota · Honda · Nissan · Subaru · Mazda · Lexus · Acura · Infiniti

The cars we see the most of, and the ones most likely to reach 200,000 miles if the maintenance is honest. Hybrid drivetrains on this list are routine work for us rather than a referral.

American

Ford · Chevrolet · Jeep · Ram · GMC · Chrysler · Dodge · Cadillac · Buick

Trucks and body-on-frame SUVs need a different lift, a different torque range and a different set of assumptions. We have the equipment for full-size pickups, which not every independent shop in Queens does.

Korean

Hyundai · Kia · Genesis

The fastest-growing part of our diary. Long factory powertrain coverage means we are usually working alongside a warranty rather than instead of one, and we will tell you plainly when a job belongs at a dealer under that coverage.

European

Volvo · Land Rover · Jaguar · Fiat · Alfa Romeo

Lower volume, longer parts lead times. We will always tell you the realistic wait for a part before you leave the car rather than after.

Electric & hybrid

Tesla · and the hybrid and battery-electric models of every marque above

High-voltage work happens in its own bay, by technicians with current high-voltage safety qualifications, on insulated tooling. See our electric and hybrid page for what we do and do not take on.

We are an independent workshop. Woodside Car Service, LLC is an independent repair facility. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by, authorised by or a franchised dealer for any vehicle manufacturer. All manufacturer and model names are the trademarks of their respective owners and are used here only to describe the vehicles we service and repair.

How it works

From the phone call to the keys back in your hand

Six steps, and you have a written price with photographs after the third.

  1. Book by phone, by form, or just turn up

The diary is real and Elena keeps it honestly. If we cannot do it today we will tell you the actual day rather than a hopeful one.

  2. Drop off, or use the key box

Early drop-off from 7:30 am, or leave it overnight in the lot behind the building and post the key through the secure box at the gate.

  3. The free inspection happens first

Whatever you came in for, the car goes on a lift and gets looked at properly before we price anything.

  4. The estimate reaches your phone

Photographs, line items, prices, and a plain-English note on which of it is urgent and which is not.

  5. Work starts only once you have replied

Approve the lines you want. Silence is not approval and never has been.

  6. Road test, then collection

Anything involving brakes, steering, suspension or tires gets road tested before it is handed back. You collect, or we return it to you if you are within three miles.

Woodside, and the blocks around it

One shop, one location, and the same owner since 2004

We are not a franchise and we are not part of a chain. Fourteen thousand square feet on 61st Street, three minutes from the 61st Street–Woodside station, and most of the cars we look after live within a mile of it. That is why the technician who diagnosed your car in year one is the same person who knows its history in year six.

We hold a New York State DMV repair shop registration and run an official New York State inspection station on site. Every technician on the floor holds current ASE certification in the areas they work in, and the shop carries garage keepers' liability cover on every vehicle in our care, including the ones parked overnight. Ask to see any of it at the desk — we would rather show you than be asked to prove it later.

  • Three minutes' walk from the 61st Street–Woodside station — the 7 train, the Long Island Rail Road, and the Q32, Q60, Q66 and Q70 buses all stop within a block. There is metered parking on 61st Street and free customer parking in our own lot behind the building, entered from the service road.
  • 24 months or 24,000 miles on parts and labour, and the warranty stays with the car.
  • Free collection and return within three miles, and a secure key box for out-of-hours drop-off.
  • Nine languages spoken across the workshop and the service desk.

Who we look after

Commuters, families, fleets and the car you are about to buy

The daily commuter — Woodside Car Service, Woodside, Queens, NY

The daily commuter

You drive it to the station, to the school, to your mother's on Sunday, and you need it to start every single time. We keep a service history for your car and tell you what is coming up next visit rather than surprising you with it.

The high-mileage car you intend to keep — Woodside Car Service, Woodside, Queens, NY

The high-mileage car you intend to keep

Past 100,000 miles the question stops being what is broken and becomes what is about to be. We will give you a straight ranking of what to spend money on this year and what can honestly wait.

The family car — Woodside Car Service, Woodside, Queens, NY

The family car

Brakes, tires and the things that hold the car to the road get looked at every visit whether you asked or not, and we tell you what we found either way. There is no version of this where we quietly say nothing.

The car you are about to buy — Woodside Car Service, Woodside, Queens, NY

The car you are about to buy

Two hours on a lift and a written report before you hand over money. We have talked as many people out of cars as into them, and we charge the same either way.

In their words

What customers say once they have been coming a while

They showed me the old parts

I asked, half expecting a fuss, and they had already put them in a box in the trunk. First shop in fifteen years that has done that without me having to insist.

Commuter, Sunnyside

The estimate came with photographs

I was at work and I could see the actual rust on the actual arm on my actual car. I approved two of the four lines and nobody made me feel bad about the other two.

Parent of two, Jackson Heights

They told me I did not need the work

I came in ready to spend eight hundred dollars on brakes because a chain told me to. They measured them, wrote the numbers down for me, and charged me nothing.

Driver, Woodside

The vibration is finally gone

Three shops, two years, four balances and an alignment I did not need. Rajib found it in twenty minutes and it was one tire.

Crossover owner, Elmhurst

They work around my shifts

I drive for a living and a day off the road costs me real money. They take the car at half seven and they tell me the truth about whether it will be ready.

Rideshare driver, Corona

Our vans stopped being a problem

Seven vehicles, one invoice, and somebody who calls me before something becomes an emergency instead of after.

Questions

The questions we are asked most

How much does a car service cost in Woodside, NY?

A full synthetic oil and filter service with a documented 30-point inspection is $89. A manufacturer scheduled service is $189 to $549 depending on which interval your car is due and what that interval actually calls for. We price to your car's real schedule rather than to a package, and you get the number before you come in — call with the year, make, model and mileage.

How much is a tire change in Woodside, NY?

$35 per wheel to mount and road-force balance a new tire, including a new valve stem and torquing to specification. A seasonal changeover between your summer and winter sets is $120 for all four. Puncture repair is $45. Rotation is $45, and free for the life of any set of tires bought here.

Do you work on my make of car?

Almost certainly. We service and repair the German, Japanese, American, Korean and European marques listed on our marques page, plus hybrids and electric vehicles in a dedicated high-voltage bay. We are an independent shop and not a franchised dealer for any manufacturer — where a job genuinely belongs at a dealer, under a factory warranty or an open recall, we will tell you so and not charge you for the conversation.

Will servicing here void my new car warranty?

No. United States federal law is explicit that a manufacturer cannot void your warranty simply because an independent shop carried out the scheduled maintenance. What matters is that the work is done to the manufacturer's schedule, with parts and fluids that meet their specification, and that it is documented. We do all three and give you the record, because that record is what protects you.

Do you offer New York State inspection?

Yes — we are an official New York State inspection station and carry out both the safety and the OBD-II emissions inspection. The fee is $37, which is set by the State; nobody may lawfully charge more. If your car fails we will tell you exactly what failed and what it costs to put right, and you are free to have that work done anywhere.

Can I get an estimate before I commit to anything?

That is the only way we work. Every car gets a free documented inspection on a lift, and you get a line-by-line estimate with photographs sent to your phone. Nothing happens until you reply, and approving three of six lines gets you exactly those three at exactly those prices.
