Detailing and paint protection in Woodside, NY

Most swirl marks on the road were put there by an automatic car wash, not by the driver, and a coating applied over them does not remove them — it seals them in for good. We correct the paint first, in two stages, and only then offer ceramic coating on top of it. A full detail is a full day of actual work, not a faster car wash.

Something wrong right now? If a warning light is red, if the temperature gauge is climbing, if the steering or the brakes feel different from how they felt yesterday, or if you can smell fuel — stop driving and call us. A tow costs less than an engine. We will talk you through whether it is safe to bring it in under its own power before you try. Call 000-000-0000

Auto detailing in Woodside, NY starts with what put the swirl marks there in the first place, which for most cars is an automatic or touchless car wash rather than anything the driver did. Those fine, criss-crossed scratches sit in the clear coat and catch direct sun at an angle, which is why a car can look clean in the driveway and look scratched all over the moment it is parked facing the afternoon light. A two-stage machine polish is how we actually remove them, not merely hide them.

Ceramic coating bonds to whatever surface it is put on, swirl marks included, and once it has cured those swirls are sealed under a hard layer that no longer responds to polishing the way bare paint does. Ask us to coat a car straight over its existing scratches to save the cost of correction and we will say no, plainly, because we would be selling you a permanent version of the exact problem you brought the car in to fix.

A full interior and exterior detail is a full day of work, not a faster car wash — decontamination, correction where it is needed, protection, and a genuine interior clean rather than a wipe-down and an air freshener. And we will be honest about what a coating does: it makes the surface easier to clean and more resistant to light scratching and chemical staining, and it does not make a car immune to a stone chip, a shopping-cart door, or somebody else's carelessness in a parking lot.

What a two-stage paint correction actually removes

Correction is subtraction, not addition — it takes a controlled amount of clear coat off the car rather than putting anything on top of it.

  • Where swirl marks actually come from

Automatic and touchless car washes use spinning brushes or high-pressure jets that drag grit across the paint in the same rotating pattern, wash after wash, which is why a car that has never seen a hand wash almost always shows the same criss-crossed pattern under direct light. Hand washing with the wrong dirty mitt does the same damage more slowly.

  • Stage one — cutting

A more aggressive compound and pad remove the top layer of clear coat where the scratches actually sit, levelling the surface rather than filling the scratches with a glaze that washes out in a month. This is the stage that does the real correction; the second stage cleans up after it.

  • Stage two — finishing

A finer pad and polish remove the fine haze the cutting stage leaves behind and bring the paint up to full clarity and gloss. Skipping this stage is how a car ends up technically corrected but visually hazier than before, which is a common shortcut in a rushed one-hour polish.

  • Measuring clear coat thickness before we start

A paint thickness gauge tells us how much clear coat a panel actually has before we remove any of it, because correction is a finite resource — a panel already thinned by a previous heavy polish gets a lighter pass or none at all, rather than a routine that assumes every panel can take the same cut.

  • What correction cannot fix

A deep scratch that has gone through the clear coat into the base colour, or a stone chip down to primer or metal, is not a polishing problem — polishing can only soften how visible it is. Those go to /paint-and-retouching.html as a touch-in or a panel repair instead.

Ceramic coating — what it does, and the one thing we will not do

A coating protects paint that is already right. It does not fix paint that is not.

  • What the coating actually is

A liquid polymer that bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, glossy, chemically resistant layer, sitting on top of the paint rather than soaking into it. It makes dirt, tree sap, bird droppings and light chemical contamination far easier to wash off before they can etch into the paint underneath.

  • Why we will not coat over swirl marks

A coating bonds to the surface it is given, and once it is cured those scratches are sealed under a hard layer for the life of the coating rather than removed. We correct first and coat second, in that order, every time — never the other way round, whatever the customer asks for.

  • What a coating honestly does not do

It does not prevent a stone chip, a keying, a shopping-cart door strike, or a deep scratch from a careless wash — it is a chemical and light-abrasion layer, not armour. Anybody promising a coating that a car cannot be damaged through is describing a product that does not exist.

  • How long it lasts, honestly

Longevity depends far more on how the car is washed and where it is parked than on anything we do in the booth, and we will not put a number on it that depends on habits we do not control. A gentle hand wash and a shaded or garaged car will always outlast the same coating on a car run through automatic washes daily.

  • Correction and coating together, priced as one job

Booking both in the same visit saves a full setup and inspection pass compared with two separate appointments, and it is how most of our coating customers actually book it — correction first, coating immediately after, on paint we have just measured and cleaned ourselves rather than a car that arrived from somewhere else.

What a full detail actually includes, inside and out

A full day, in order, rather than a shorter list done quickly.

  • Exterior — wash and decontamination first

A pH-neutral hand wash followed by a clay or chemical decontamination step that lifts bonded contamination a wash alone cannot touch — the embedded specks that feel like light sandpaper when you run a hand over clean, dry paint. Nothing gets polished or coated on top of paint that has not been decontaminated first.

  • Interior — more than a vacuum

Full extraction of carpets and seats, conditioning for leather or vinyl, a genuine clean of the air vents and door shuts rather than just the surfaces you can see sitting down, and glass cleaned properly on the inside, which is the pane almost every quick wash skips entirely.

  • Why it takes a full day and not an hour

Correct decontamination, conditioning products and any coating each need time to dwell or cure before the next step, and doing it properly on every panel and every seat takes longer than most people expect the first time they book one. We would rather take the day and do it once than rush it and see you again in a month.

  • Before you sell, or hand back a lease

A full detail is the cheapest thing you can do to a car in the week before a sale or a lease-end inspection, and it is worth doing after any dent or scuff repair rather than before, so the finished detail is the last thing anybody sees. See /dent-repair.html and /pricing.html for the repairs worth doing first.

  • How often a daily driver actually needs it

A full detail once or twice a year, with a maintenance wash and a quick coating top-up every month or two in between, keeps most cars looking properly cared for without paying for a full day of work every few weeks. Fleet and rideshare vehicles are the exception and usually want it more often.

Questions

Detailing & Protection — the questions we are asked most

How much does paint correction and ceramic coating cost?

A two-stage machine polish and paint correction is $449 on its own. Ceramic coating, applied only to paint we have corrected, is $899. Booked together in one visit, which is how most customers do it, the combined price is $1,260 rather than the two added separately. A full interior and exterior detail without correction or coating is $249, and that is the number to start from if your paint is already in good shape.

Will ceramic coating remove my swirl marks?

No, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a problem you will be stuck with for the life of the coating. A coating bonds to whatever surface it is given, scratches included, and seals them under a hard layer rather than lifting them out. We correct the paint in two stages first, then coat the corrected surface, and we will decline to coat a car straight over visible swirl marks even if that is what you ask for.

How long does a full detail take?

A full day, and we mean that literally rather than as a marketing phrase — decontamination, correction where it is needed, protection, and a genuine interior clean each take real time to do properly, and several steps need time to dwell or cure before the next one starts. It is not a faster car wash and we will not pretend it is one to get you in and out sooner.

What causes swirl marks on a car's paint?

Almost always an automatic or touchless car wash, whose spinning brushes or high-pressure jets drag grit across the paint in the same rotating pattern on every visit, along with hand washing done with a dirty mitt or the wrong soap. The marks sit as fine scratches in the clear coat and are most visible at an angle in direct sun, which is why a car can look clean in the driveway and swirled all over in the afternoon light.

Does ceramic coating mean I never have to wash my car?

No. A coating makes dirt, sap and light chemical contamination easier to rinse off and less likely to etch into the paint, but the car still needs regular washing, and how it is washed matters more to how long the coating performs well than almost anything we do in the booth. Automatic car washes are still the single biggest cause of fresh swirl marks, coated paint or not.

What is the difference between a car wash and a full detail?

A car wash cleans the surface you can see in a few minutes. A full detail decontaminates the paint down to the bonded contamination a wash cannot touch, corrects it if it needs correcting, protects it, and does the same level of work inside the car — extraction, conditioning, vents, glass — rather than a quick vacuum and a wipe-down. It is a full day of work rather than a five-minute stop, and it is priced accordingly.

Can correction fix a deep scratch or a stone chip?

No, and we will tell you that honestly rather than polish over it and hope it looks better under shop lighting. Correction removes fine surface scratches by levelling a controlled amount of clear coat; a scratch that has gone through to the base colour, or a chip down to primer or bare metal, needs an actual paint repair. See /paint-and-retouching.html for touch-in and panel pricing for that kind of damage.

What is your warranty on detailing and coating work?

24 months or 24,000 miles on the workmanship, the same as everything else we sell — if a coating we applied fails to bond properly or lifts, we put it right at no charge. What we cannot warranty is how long the coating's performance lasts against a car's actual washing and parking habits, which we do not control, and we will tell you that plainly rather than print a number we cannot stand behind.
